Art Print “Goddess Tara” from Cycle of Artworks “Mahavidyas”

Inspirational text for artwork "Goddess Tara” by author Mai Ram

I praise You Tara! You save me from danger. You protect my life. Glory to the Compassionate and Spreader of Mercy! You crush your enemies.

I meditate on Goddess Tara, who wears tiger skin garments around her waist, adorns herself with snakes and sticks out her tongue. She holds a sword in one hand and a skull in the other. I especially worship Her. One who is boundless mercy, but also has a fierce and sometimes terrifying appearance.

I meditate on the divine Tara, the Mother of the three worlds, who stands on a white lotus floating in the waters of the world. In her hands she holds a sword, scissors, a skull and a blue lotus. Her complexion is blue and she is adorned with three beautiful snakes. She has three red eyes. Her hair is shiny. Her tongue is constantly moving and her teeth and mouth look terrible. Her forehead is decorated with ornaments.

Glory to the Divine Ruler Tara, who bestows prosperity, who rests on Shiva's heart and steps forward threateningly. Her form shines like a blazing fire. She gives shelter and floods my heart with gracious nectar and removes pride. She is adorned with snakes as ornaments, wears a tiger skin as a skirt and is adorned with a garland of severed heads. She is scary and dispels my fears. Her complexion shines like the moon.

I praise You Tara, who helps overcome difficulties. I praise Her who saves me from danger and shows me mercy. O Goddess Tara, free me from the slavery of samsara, cut off the shackles that bind me to ignorance and make my consciousness limited. Please infuse my heart with your gracious nectar.

Mahavidyas represent transcendental knowledge and powers. The ten Mahavidyas are the ten degrees of transcendental cognition. They are the sources of all that is to be known. Mahadevi, the great Goddess, also called Maya, causes captivity, leads astray in ignorance, this is called avidya. But it is also liberating. The ten Mahavidyas are the ten forms in which the Goddess brings enlightenment and liberating knowledge called vidya.
